About Bachata

What is bachata,
and why is everyone learning it?

Bachata is a partner dance from the Dominican Republic built on a simple 8-count step with a signature hip motion on the fourth beat. It's slower and more grounded than salsa, danced in a close hold, and deeply tied to the music — which means it feels incredible once you have even basic technique.

It's exploded in popularity over the last decade, and for good reason: it's one of the most accessible Latin dances for beginners, one of the most satisfying for experienced dancers, and it's played at virtually every Latin night in Chicago.

At Urbanity, we teach from traditional Dominican bachata through Moderna and Urban styles — so you build a complete foundation and can dance anywhere, with anyone.

What We Teach

One program.
Three styles woven in.

Our bachata program doesn't separate styles into different class tracks. Instead, Traditional, Moderna, and Urban bachata are all woven into the curriculum across every level — infused based on what you're working on, how you're progressing, and where your interests are pulling you. You're not picking a lane. You're building a complete foundation.

Traditional Bachata

The root of everything. Dominican bachata builds your timing, hip accent, and the lead/follow connection that every other style depends on. This runs through every level of our program.

Bachata Moderna

A fusion of traditional bachata with elements of tango and other partner dances — more dynamic, more varied in frame. What you'll most commonly see on social floors and at festivals today.

Urban Bachata

Bachata meets hip hop and street dance. Bigger moves, more attitude, more freedom in styling. Infused into our curriculum as students progress and as the music and culture call for it.

A unique Urbanity offering — sensual bachata prep

Most studios either teach sensual bachata directly or don't address it at all. We do something different: our Body Movement Technique and Head Movement Technique classes build the physical awareness, isolation, and connection that sensual bachata actually requires — before you ever need it. You won't find this kind of dedicated technique prep at other studios. Students who've taken these classes find that navigating sensual bachata at socials and festivals feels natural, not improvised.

Program Structure

Our levels, explained —
because we name things differently

You won't see "Beginner," "Intermediate," or "Advanced" on our class schedule. We use our own naming system designed around how dancers actually progress. Here's what each level means — and where you fit.
Fundamentals
Start here — no experience needed

A 1–2 month course focused on the core elements that distinguish bachata from other styles: timing, posture, 8-step characteristics. Your first few basic steps, lead/follow introduction, and everything you need to enter Core 1.

  • The 8-count basic step and hip accent
  • Posture and frame fundamentals
  • Introduction to lead and follow
  • Prepares you for Core 1 material
Core 1
Comfortable with the basics

Four class themes rotating in a 4-month cycle. Focuses on the beginner "core" elements and variations needed for good social dancing. Includes skill-building to develop technique and blend previously learned material.

  • Core elements and beginner variations
  • Skill-building and technique refinement
  • Blending previously learned material
  • 2–3 cycles recommended, repeatable as many times as you like
Core 2
Solid Core 1 foundation

Four themes in a 4-month cycle. Moves from beginner to low-intermediate core elements and variations. Most students can enter at any point — "Catch Up" private lessons available if needed.

  • Low-intermediate core elements
  • Deeper technique and blending
  • Entry possible at any point in cycle
  • 2–3 cycles recommended, repeatable
Prep Cycles
Bridging Core 2 to Intermediate

Covers non-core concepts that enhance your social dance experience and prepare you for Intermediate. May include head movement, body movement, spin technique, and more. Can be taken at any point during Core-level training — must be completed before entering Intermediate.

  • Head movement and body movement technique
  • Spin and turn preparation
  • Social dance experience enhancement
  • Required before entering Intermediate
Intermediate
What most studios call "advanced"

This is our most advanced program level. If you're looking for advanced bachata classes in Chicago — this is it. We just use a name that reflects where you are in a genuine learning progression rather than a label. Intermediate at Urbanity is not entry-level intermediate — it's the culmination of a structured, multi-year journey through our program.

  • Advanced partnering and connection
  • Musical interpretation and phrasing
  • Complex turn patterns and combinations
  • Developing your own personal style

Why Urbanity

Why learn bachata here
specifically

Specialists
Instructors who actually dance bachata
Our bachata instructors perform, compete, and social dance in the style they teach. They're not generalists covering whatever's on the schedule — this is their thing.
Your Style
Technique first, then your expression
We give you a real technical foundation — then encourage you to develop how you want to dance. The goal isn't to make you a copy of your instructor. It's to help you find your own voice in the music.
Community
A scene that goes beyond class
Our students go out to Chicago's Latin nights together. They practice at our monthly socials. Learning bachata at Urbanity means entering a community where you'll actually use what you're learning — fast.
Inclusive
A genuinely safe and welcoming space
Urbanity is built to be inclusive across backgrounds, body types, experience levels, and identities. Everyone feels welcome. That's not marketing — it's what our students tell us keeps them coming back.
No Partner
Solo entry, always
Every class rotates partners, so you'll dance with multiple people throughout. You learn faster, meet more people, and never have to worry about finding someone to bring.
Real Foundations
Built for the long game
Our structured program — Fundamentals through Intermediate — is designed so that every level genuinely prepares you for the next. You're not just collecting classes. You're building a real skill with a clear path forward.

Also at Urbanity

Bachata is just
the beginning

Most of our bachata students end up trying at least one more style. Here's what else is on the schedule.

💃
Salsa

The classic. Faster, more footwork, played at every Latin night alongside bachata. A natural second dance.

🌊
Brazilian Zouk

Fluid and expressive — very different energy from bachata but equally addictive. Chicago's most established Zouk community.

🌍
Kizomba

Close-connection, grounded, deeply musical. If you love the connection side of bachata, you'll love Kizomba.

🏃
Body Movement

Our technique class that builds the physical awareness for sensual bachata and every other style you'll ever dance.

👠
Heels

Solo feminine style built around power and expression. A completely different side of dance — equally worth it.

🎤
Hip Hop

Street styles and current choreography. All levels, all bodies. Always a good time on the schedule.

Common Questions

Bachata FAQs

Do I need a partner to take bachata classes?

No partner needed — ever. Our classes rotate so you'll dance with multiple people throughout. You actually learn faster this way because you adapt to different partners. Just show up solo.

Is bachata hard to learn as a complete beginner?

Bachata is one of the most beginner-friendly partner dances out there. The basic step is straightforward, the music makes the timing intuitive, and you can start feeling comfortable on a social floor within a few classes. Most people are surprised by how quickly it clicks.

What's the difference between bachata and salsa?

Bachata is generally slower and more grounded, danced in a closer hold, with a signature hip accent on the fourth beat. Salsa is faster, more footwork-oriented, and slightly more structured. Both are played at Latin nights — many dancers learn both, and they complement each other well.

Do you teach sensual bachata?

We don't currently offer sensual bachata as a core class — but we do offer Body Movement and Head Movement technique classes that build exactly the physical awareness, isolation, and connection you need to navigate that style confidently. Many students find these are the best possible preparation before exploring sensual bachata at socials or festivals.

What do your class level names mean? I don't see "beginner" or "advanced" on the schedule.

We use our own naming system: Fundamentals → Core 1 → Core 2 → Prep Cycles → Intermediate. Fundamentals is for complete beginners. Intermediate is our most advanced level — equivalent to what most studios would call advanced. We named it this way because it reflects a genuine, structured progression rather than a loose label. If you're not sure where you fit, reach out and we'll help place you correctly.

How often should I take classes to actually improve?

Once a week will give you steady progress. Twice a week accelerates it significantly. The real accelerator though is going out to social nights — dancing in real environments cements what you learn in class faster than anything else. Our community makes that easy.
